Ob-Gyn
Associates of Chico is a group of three physicians.
Dr. Steven Lazaro first started practicing in
Chico in 1980. A year later he was joined by Dr.
Susan Kehm. In 1984, Dr. Walter Mazen, Jr. became
the third member of the group. We are graduates
of American medical schools, and have received
our post-graduate specialty training in a likewise
fashion. We are all certified by the American Board
of Obstetrics and Gynecology. We each run our
own practices independently, seeing our own gynecology
and obstetrical patients. Since we share call
coverage on nights and weekends, our pregnant
patients will usually see the other physicians
for one or two "get acquainted" visits.
We have been sharing the same office space since
1984, and are conveniently located one block from
Enloe Medical Center on The Esplanade.
On
Call Coverage
A physician will be on call 24 hours a day, every
day of the year, including holidays. The call
duty is distributed equally among the three physicians,
with a fourth physician outside of our group covering
for us one weekend per month. Since each of us
is primarily responsible for our own obstetrical
patients, we will be available for deliveries
of our patients during office hours as well as
when we are on call. On call services are for
emergencies and obstetrical management. For routine
concerns such as prescriptions, refills of prescriptions,
appointments, and small questions, please try
to call during office hours (Mon.-Thurs. 9 a.m.
to 5 p.m., Fri. 9a.m. to 2p.m.). For important
after hour problems that cannot wait until the
next day please call the office number at (530)
895-0423 and the answering service will page the
physician on call. This may take a few minutes.
If there is a true emergency, please call 911
and/or get to the closest hospital emergency room
as soon as possible. The phone number for Enloe
Hospitals' Labor and Delivery unit is (530) 332-7313.
They can be notified if you are going to the hospital.
Our
Hospital
N. T. Enloe Memorial Hospital is
a non-profit community hospital that serves the
medical needs of Chico and the surrounding area.
It was established by Dr. Enloe in 1913, with
the original building located in downtown Chico.
It moved to its present location on The Esplanade
in 1937. Since then, the facility has undergone
a series of expansions through the 1990's. In
its goal to provide state of the art quality care
for the community, it is currently preparing to
embark on a major transition. The Enloe Century
Project is a master plan to expand the main campus
in a manner that will accommodate anticipated
needs for at least the next 50 years. Starting
this year, work will begin on a new tower adjacent
to the existing tower. There will be new patient
services, rooms, and facilities that will include
a new surgical suite and new facilities for women's
health care. The fourth floor will be devoted
to a state of the art birthing center and mother-baby
postpartum unit. We have a Level II nursery that
allows us to care for our preterm high risk patients
starting at 32 weeks without having to transport
these mothers to Sacramento. Pediatrics will be
adjacent to this unit. Although the population
of Chico is approximately 80,000, the drawing
area for our facility is actually 450,000. This
is due to the high level of sophistication of
the medical and surgical specialties and sub specialties
represented in our medical community. Enloe is
a state designated trauma center and supports
an air ambulance helicopter service. In addition
to the services provided at the main campus, the
hospital has two emergency walk-in facilities
(Prompt Care), a Cancer Center, a Children's Center,
a Breast Care Center, an in-patient behavioral
health unit, a rehabilitation hospital, an outpatient
surgery center, and a medical office building.
